What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is typically caused by an increase in intraocular pressure, and it is this pressure that damages a person's optic nerves. The damage caused by glaucoma is permanent.  It is therefore important for everyone to receive an annual eye exam to catch this condition early.

The Two Different Types of Glaucoma

In order to truly understand this disease, it is first important to understand the different types of glaucoma. The first is open-angle glaucoma, which is often called primary glaucoma. This is the most common type of glaucoma and is one of the leading causes of blindness in people who are over the age of 60 years old. This type of glaucoma sets in gradually. In this condition, the eye does not drain fluid as well as it should. As a result, pressure starts to build up behind the eye. This pressure is what damages a person's optic nerves.

The other type of glaucoma is called secondary glaucoma. Some people call this narrow or angle-closure glaucoma. This is a separate type of glaucoma where the iris is close to the drainage angle of the eye itself. This can be viewed as a piece of paper that gradually starts to slide over the drain of the sink. Eventually, the eye is going to get completely blocked. When this happens, glaucoma develops as the pressure within the eye increases rapidly. This leads to damage to the optic nerve and symptoms like severe eye pain, nausea, and loss of vision.  Angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency.
