Lasik FAQs

There are a lot of ways to improve your vision, and one of them is LASIK. This procedure has the potential to give you 20/20 vision without glasses or contact lenses and has a minimal level of risk. But like any medical procedure, there are pros and cons to LASIK, along with pre-and post-op care instructions to be carefully followed. If you're in the Wichita area, Wichita Optometry, P.A. may be able to help you see more clearly. Here are some of the most common questions our eye doctor gets about LASIK eye surgery.

LASIK FAQs

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK works by removing some of the tissue in the eye to refocus the way the light hits the back of the eye. By using a laser to make an incision in the cornea and fold it back out of the way, it's possible to get access to the tissue, which is then also removed via laser. The corneal flap is carefully folded back into place and will heal on its own without stitches being required. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes, and it's very important to follow the instructions your eye doctor gives you for preparing for the procedure and taking good care of your healing eyes afterward.

Can Any Eye Doctor Perform LASIK?

Not every eye doctor performs LASIK. You want to talk to your optometrist about the kind of eye care that you need. Then you can make sure you're choosing a trusted professional to perform LASIK, which greatly reduces the risk of anything going wrong during or after the procedure.

Is LASIK a Guarantee of Better Vision?

While LASIK improves vision to 20/20 with few risks for the vast majority of people who undergo this procedure, it's not a guarantee of 20/20 vision. Over time, many people who have LASIK also need reading glasses for small print and close-up detail. However, that's also common with aging, so it's not generally seen as a problem or a risk when LASIK is performed.

What Kinds of Risks Come With LASIK?

The biggest risks of LASIK are infection, and a lack of 20/20 vision after the procedure is completed. Vision loss, corneal damage, and other concerns are also possible. With proper postoperative care, the risks are minimal.
