Macular Degeneration FAQs

Wichita Optometry Offers Care for Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the “macula" of the eyes, an important structure for normal vision. At Wichita Optometry in Wichita, KS, we provide testing and ongoing care for our patients with macular degeneration and other eye diseases. Here are some frequently asked questions we receive about macular degeneration.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the macula, an eye structure located in the center of the retina. There are two forms of the disease, the “dry” form and the “wet” form. In the dry form, which is most common, the macula becomes thinner, and deposits of protein called “drusa” form to distort vision. In the “wet” form, new blood vessels develop that can leak fluid or blood, causing damage to light sensing cells in the retina. Both types of macular degeneration are progressive, that is, they become worse over time. In some cases, sudden vision loss can occur.

Who Is At Risk For Developing This Eye Disease?

Macular degeneration is a disease of aging. However, genetic factors also play a part I the disease, which seems to run in families. Females and those of Caucasian race are more at risk for AMD. Smoking, high blood pressure, having light-colored eyes and obesity are also factors in AMD. Some medications may also be a factor in the development of the disease.

What Are the Symptoms of Macular Degeneration?

There may be no symptoms of the macular degeneration in the early stages. That’s why regular visits to your eye doctor are so important. Your optometrist can detect changes in the eyes that may signal a problem. At later stages in AMD, the individual may notice shadowy areas in your central vision. Images may seem fuzzy or distorted.

What Treatment Is Available For Macular Degeneration?

There is no standard treatment for the dry form of AMD, which is the common form. However, taking supplements, such as lutein, zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids can help to slow progress of the disease. A number of mediations are available for the wet form of the disease, and surgery may be needed to manage the proliferation of new blood vessels.
